Saratoga to Friends Lake - The fun begins

Monday June 27, 2016

Bicycling Distance:   42 miles inn to inn, rolling hills with a few longer climbs.  The longer climb was at the very end and was a warning of hills to come. We'd had a pretty long day up to here which made the last few miles into the Inn much tougher.

Friends Lake to Bryant Lake, Graphite Mt, Ticondaroga and Brandon, VT

Tuesday Jun 28, 2016

Our second day out from Saratoga Springs started with a nice ride around the west side of Brant Lake. It was reasonably flat and we covered the 16 miles to our morning stop pretty easily. The afternoon in Vermont would be a bigger challenge.

To avoid a 1,000 ft climb, Kathy took the van from the break area near Bryant Lake up to Hague, NY where we stopped for an additional break along Lake George. Prior to Hague we climbed up and over Graphite Mt which was about 4 miles up and four miles down. The back side was much steeper and a fun ride down.

From the Hague we traveled along side Lake George for a few miles into the town of Ticondaroga where we stopped for lunch in a park next to the La Chute River Falls. The park was busy with people setting up for the Forth of July.

After lunch we rode out to the ferry that took us across the southern end of Lake Champlain into the Green Mountain State. The afternoon turned out to be really hot and the rolling hills didn't seem to roll as much as they had been. When we got to Orwell, VT the heat started to take it's toll.
The last 15 miles were some of the hardest of the trip and reminded us how lucky we had been with the cool weather.

Our home for two nights was the Lilac Inn, 53 Park St., Brandon, VT

Middlebury Loop

Wednesday Jun 29, 2016 - Day 21,916 (60 years)

This was a bonus or rest day. Kathy enjoyed her rest and I did the loop up and beyond Middlebury. It was a good day to get out and stretch my legs.

Stopped in Middlebury for lunch by the van and then headed back to town. Took some shortcuts which put me on some hard pack gravel roads. I also avoided some thunderstorms which blew through Middlebury and the return trip.

All in all a great way to spend my 60th birthday with some alone time to reflect on how lucky I am. Back in Brandon for the afternoon which was similar to previous afternoons with the people on the ride gathering for some post ride PMCs and then a nice dinner with my wonderful wife and the rest of the folks at a local restaurant.

Day 4 from Carolina Trailwinds Itinary

Brandon to Manchester

Thursday, June 30, 2016

This was a nice day with three parts. First was Brandon to Proctor where we stopped at Vermont Marble. We got a quick tour thru the Marble museum and I was amazed at he pictures of the mining process. Next we had about a 17 mile stretch down to Middletown Springs where we stopped for lunch at Sissy's Kitchen. After lunch we had 26 miles into Manchester and arrived at the very nice Inn at Manchester reasonably early in the afternoon.

A job well done

Manchester back to Saratoga Springs

Friday July 1, 2016

Our final day of the trip took us back to Saratoga Springs with a stop at the Saratoga Monument before we got back into town. We were able to shower and have lunch in the Saratoga Park Saratoga Spa State Park before heading back to NJ. Had some terrific thunderstorms on our way back to Ridgewood which probably led to my bike breaking down the following week but that's a story for another day.
